A bright red dress, gathered in wide folds that fan out towards the bottom, accentuating its dramatic presence. White, pink and yellow flowers are arranged along the sides, creating points of light against the dark background and drawing the eye towards the centre of the canvas. Subtle golden details appear on the bodice, whilst freely drawn lettering and marks emerge from the surrounding darkness. The red of the dress and the drapery dominates the entire composition, allowing the flowers to stand out as small splashes of colour.
