Cenotes are underground caves typical of Mexico containing deep water, created where the ceiling of a cave collapsed. The cenotes were the Maya civilisation's only source of water in the jungle and are considered sacred. In this shot characterised by the aerial perspective, photographer John Costa mixes the sacred with the profane: tourists blissfully enjoy a swim in these waters, unaware of the magic of the place they are in.
