"Loquitur Deus in silentio cordis" is an expression of St Augustine's that meant nothing other than "truth dwells in the depths of the soul". In line with Plotinus, who from his study of the soul and its faculties had discovered that "we possess God as a principle that is above intelligible nature and real being", Augustine had convinced himself that by listening attentively to the silence of his heart, he had heard within himself a word that was much truer than what in fact belonged to him by virtue of his finite nature. So therein lies the innermost meaning of this wonderful oil on canvas by Lamberto Melina: listening to one's own heart in order to grasp the deepest secrets of Life.
