03_Epsylon

In Genesis we read that the universe was created through the articulation of sound: "In the beginning was the Word...". Seen from this point of view, letters and words are much more than mere tools for communication; they are charged with an elemental 'force' capable of creating and bringing to life the whole of existing things. Epsylon in particular has taken on fascinating spiritual and esoteric meanings in many remote cultures. From two, one; from one, two. The symbol is therefore at first sight a symbol of transformation or creation. Often identified with a crossroads, it has embodied the same strength of patricentric decision, the masculine strength of the king who leads the people. On the other hand, the Y has often been affixed to the king of kings, to Christ perhaps by virtue of its resemblance to the cross, but, more fascinatingly, thinking of it as a symbolic manifestation of Jesus' ability to 'think' with both brain lobes. We all know that our brain is composed of two parts separated by the longitudinal cleft. Summarily, one, the left, deals with practical 'things', and the right with emotional experiences. In our civilisation, which is extremely masculine and patriarchal, the part most used is the left, so much so that a kind of partial atrophy of the right lobe has often been found. This imbalance leads to an overdose of rationality in our lives and the consequent repression of much of the subtler emotions and perceptions.
