In this incredibly graceful oil on canvas, Lamberto Melina takes up the myth of Arachne a mythological figure. Ovid tells her story in Book VI of the Metamorphoses,[1] but it seems that the character, already mentioned in Virgil's Georgics, is of Greek origin.  Arachne lived in Colophon, Lydia, and the girl was known for her incredible talent in the art of weaving, so much so that she was rumoured to have learned it directly from the goddess Athena.
The meaning of this work is, as always, symbolic: if we want to resemble the gods, what we must do is learn to weave the threads of our thoughts to shape our reality. Only by doing so can humanity rediscover its divine nature.
