This painting by Toni Alfano is rich in symbols: the fan (in Japanese, Il sensu) is one of the most iconic accessories in Japanese culture, a symbol of good fortune but also a mysterious pictorial element that partially conceals the face of a woman who turns her mysterious gaze towards the spectator, and the lily, a flower that has always been considered a symbol of beauty and purity.  The technique used by the artist to create the work is always descialbo, on a wooden and cardboard frame, covered with a thin layer of cement. A slow layering of white/coloured tempera paint recreates the effect of a wall hypothetically repainted over decades. The figures are done with charcoal and bitumen glazes. The last process is Descialbo: an ancient restoration technique that literally means 'tearing away', removing the layer of paint from the plaster with a hammer, spatula or scalpel. The partial destruction and breaking of the surface expresses the action of time and atmospheric phenomena, as well as the loss and constant redefinition of its identity.
