Ancient and modern coexist in this work by Italian artist Toni Alfano.  Alfano once again delves into the themes of ancient Japan, but in a key that is always original and characterised by extreme technical finesse. What is striking is the syncretism that characterises all his 'Sonatinas'. The viewer finds himself bewildered in front of a painting, sculpture, a fragment of a Renaissance fresco 'torn' from a wall, and thus a purely Western aesthetic, contrasting with the painting of a bewitching Japanese geisha in colourful traditional costumes. The end result is anything but oxymoronic, rather an extraordinary synthesis of opposites.
