A shadowy, gloomy landscape gives the viewer a certain sense of imbalance. In this medium-sized oil on canvas, Matthias Brandes paints houses floating on water, emerging in a row from three small corridors. We do not know what is behind the high grey wall, nor do we know where these moving houses are heading. The scene is dark and shadowy, a great silence hovers over the painting. Abandoning the warm and reassuring colours of his earlier works, the German artist confronts himself with colder tones that hint at a darker imagery. Brandes' skill this time lies in varying colours while maintaining his ability to suspend time and transport the viewer into a dreamy, unreal dimension.
