Toni Alfano’s paintings are a magical illusion, being actually crafted on cardboard covered by a thin layer of concrete. A slow stratification of tempera recreates the effect of a supposedly painted wall. The figures are made of charcoal and tar enamel.

The technique used by the artist has ancient origins and is called Descialbo: a phase of the restoration of works of art - especially frescoes - which consists in removing the paint layer from the plaster with a hammer, a spatula or a scalpel.

Besides the subjects of great beauty and sensuality that recall the memory of Japan that was, it is precisely the technique that constantly recalls the concept of Memory which, as the support on which the works are made, is stratified...
