Sunset is, by definition, the moment of the day that precedes dusk. A fleeting moment that connects the realm of reality and the realm of the possible. We are not too surprised to see small dwellings floating in the center of the painting. A landscape that, with its severe and rational features, silently yields to the allure of the possible and the unreal. Matthias Brandes chooses this time to encapsulate this sense of uncertainty in a large canvas. After the sunset anything can happen.
