In this fascinating work by Angelo Accardi, the interplay between reality and surreality is manifested in a scene that blends art, worldliness and irony. The context is that of an exclusive gala evening, a cultured and sophisticated setting dominated by a large contemporary artwork inspired by Damien Hirst's famous ‘Spot Paintings’. The bright colours of the circles almost seem to vibrate on the canvas, creating a contrast with the elegant figures, dressed in black and enveloped in an aura of seriousness and composure.

But here reality crumbles, as it often does in Accardi's world: an enormous ostrich appears on the right, its neck slender and its gaze almost perplexed, as if it were the only one questioning the absurdity of the scene. Circled in red, like a detail not to be missed, it becomes the real protagonist of the work, embodying the sense of estrangement and disorientation typical of the ‘Misplaced’ series. Its presence breaks all formality, inserting an element of disorientation and subtle irony within the visual narrative.

Accardi's painting technique is expressed through material brushstrokes and drips of colour that break up the rigidity of the composition, suggesting a sense of movement and imperfection. The oil on canvas is treated with a language that oscillates between the figurative and the expressionist, allowing deliberately undefined details to emerge, as if the work were a fragment of memory poised between dream and reality.

Once again, Accardi invites the viewer to reconsider the boundary between the usual and the unexpected, between what is socially accepted and what unexpectedly escapes all schemes, transforming the scene into an allegory of the absurd.
